Conflict – issue/disagreement/hostile 

Definition-the interaction of opposing ideas(can be external or internal)

  internal-issue/problems between oneself

  external-other people(e.g.:family pressure,financial situations )

 

Types of conflict

 

Dramatic conflict is the protagonist’s struggle against something or someone.

-man vs. man

-man vs. environment(storm,beast,drought)

-man vs. system

-man vs. self(internal, may test moral beliefs,value)

 

Variation of conflict can arise from gender, age, religion and culture.

 

Causes and effects of conflict

 

-conflict arises when there is CHANGE

-changes may be major on minor

-while change is universal and common, it is not always accepted

-examples of changes: seasons, lives, relationship, feelings, bodies, locations and technologies

-conflicts arises when people resist changes

-the intensity of conflict depends how people react to the change

-people must learn to cope with changes if they want to survive

-the action in drama depends on conflict.

 

The importance of conflict

 

-plot cannot be constructed without conflict

-conflict is the essence of drama

-central feature of the screenplay

-as your characters attempt to reach their goals, they come into conflict with each other

-give your characters drives needs to make them dangerous.

-the end of the story nears when the protagonist and antagonist approach their goals and their conflicts rises generate maximum suspense and excitement.

  1. Checked. Next time create a page and put all your notes for the class there, label it Wk 1, Wk2 etc…. rather than separate into weeks.
